Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta students had the opportunity to shine when the Captivate performing and creative arts program recently hosted its 10th Anniversary Showcase at Quaycentre, Sydney Olympic Park.
The show combined a spectacular musical ensemble of 165 students, backed up by the 1000-student primary choir and 190-student secondary choir singing songs such as One Dream, Come Back to the Sea, Keep your Lamps Trimmed and Burning and River Run Free.
This was complemented by a dance ensemble of 382 dancers who kept audiences enraptured. There was also a secondary drama ensemble of 90 students and a student ‘spoken word choir’ comprising 80 students from four primary schools.
One of the highlights of the performance was the use of puppetry and props to reflect the showcase’s storyline. The impact of the puppets was dramatic, guiding the audience through show’s theme of ‘creativity’: from the igniting of the creative spark, through to creative play, creative block, creative flow, and finally creative genius. The show’s finale was a stunning performance of Rihanna’s Diamonds in the Sky.
Captivate director Mark Hopkins said that for many students involved, it was their first major public performance.
“Others were consolidating many years of practice, rehearsal and performing, honing their skills for HSC practical examinations in the coming weeks or auditions for specialist post school arts study pathways in the coming months.
“Captivate is the program by which all students, regardless of prior experience or the location of their school, can access specialist learning in the arts.
“With a constant stream of research documenting evidence of the cognitive and social benefits of arts participation and learning, it is vital that such learning is part of each child’s education.”
St Andrew’s Primary, Marayong acting Principal Kim McDonald described the show as a rewarding experience for all those involved.
“Students have been rehearsing since February, both during recess and lunch breaks and also at formal off-site rehearsals with other students in the Diocese as well as during the school holidays,’’ Mrs McDonald said.
“This level of collaboration and creativity has provided opportunities for students to express themselves in a unique way. We are so proud of the students and thank them for their commitment, enthusiasm and persistence over such a long period of time.”

On Monday a selection of our Year 6 Mackillop Award students and Year 5 Mini Vinnies students had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Catholic Mission Socktober Launch at Wanderers Fives, where they participated in a day of reflection, learning and soccer! A highlight of the day was the soccer matches, while also learning about the importance and significance of Socktober and how it supports communities in need around the world. Our students returned inspired and excited to share their learning with the rest of our school as we prepare to launch Socktober at St Angela’s in Term 4. We look forward to seeing how, together as a St Angela’s community, we can put our faith into action and make a difference! 🧦⚽💙

Yesterday afternoon, our Kindergarten students proudly showcased their learning and celebrated all the wonderful things they have been exploring throughout the year. Our students shared their learning about Tiddalick the Frog, demonstrated their understanding of patterns, celebrated the unique way God made each of us and entertained us with lots of wonderful performances. It was a beautiful afternoon filled with smiles, singing, learning and plenty of Kindergarten joy! We are so proud of our Kindergarten students and all they have achieved this year.

Today, Year 2 students participated in their Agents of Grace Reflection Day, a special day of spiritual formation focused on forgiveness, reconciliation and sharing God’s grace with others. The day began with a beautiful liturgy alongside our parents and families, before students returned to their classrooms to participate in a range of meaningful activities. Throughout the day, students reflected on the importance of forgiveness, repairing relationships and showing kindness, compassion and grace in their everyday lives. Year 3 students participated in Mercy Day yesterday, a dedicated day of spiritual formation focused on reflection, prayer, and community. Throughout the day, students embarked on a prayerful pilgrimage across our school grounds, centering their reflections on key Scripture passages specifically The Good Samaritan and The Beatitudes. Stopping at various stations, they deepened their personal prayer lives through imaginative contemplation, biblical micrography, and meaningful dialogue with one another. The day concluded with a special afternoon session where parents and families joined us to reflect alongside their children and listen to their experiences. Thank you to all our parents and families who attended, your presence and participation made our afternoon so much more meaningful.

PRAYER FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY THE NEPAL FLOODS As catastrophic floods and landslides in the Nepal-Tibet border region leave more than 469 people dead and 1400 missing, including 39 Australians, we hold all those affected in our prayers. Loving God, Be close to all those caught in the devastation of the floods in Nepal and Tibet. ✨ Kindy’s Fairytale Adventure! ✨ Kindergarten enjoyed a magical incursion with The Drama Box! 🏰🐉🧚♀️ The children stepped into the wonderful world of fairytales, dressing up as a colourful cast of characters and using their imaginations, creativity and dramatic skills to help “unfracture” a fractured fairytale! 📖✨ There was plenty of laughter, excitement and imaginative play as our Kindy students became part of the story themselves. What a wonderful way to bring our learning about fairytales to life! 🌟 A huge thank you to The Drama Box for such an engaging and memorable experience!
