Collecting pyjamas for refugee children
St Angela’s Primary Castle Hill students raised thousands of dollars to help refugees who have fled to Australia.
The students set up a market area where they offered services and games to fellow students who all paid $5 - and they also raised awareness about the challenges refugees face when moving to a new country.
Students collected pyjamas, others set up a “selfie stand”, while some held carnival games, such a quoits and throwing tennis balls through the holes.
There were many digital displays which shed a different light on the refugee issue.
Saxon, Charlie and Nathan wrote a book titled “We feel the pain” that encourages the reader to consider the feelings refugees must be experiencing.
They also developed an animated clip that continues this theme.
Principal Tony Calabria said the refugee theme was part of a project based learning exercise the students were undertaking.
“This project really focuses on mission and helps the students better understand the problems other people have to face,” he said.
It was a great family day with parents coming along too.
Money raised will go to the Jesuit Refugee Service, which is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons.
